Weather Wallpaper for Projectivy Launcher
A wallpaper provider plugin that turns your Projectivy Launcher home screen into a weather display. Current conditions, optional forecast panels, and backgrounds that react to the weather.
Weather data from Open-Meteo. No API key, no account, no tracking.
What it shows Always: temperature, conditions, feels-like, today's high and low, and wind with direction.
Optional, each toggled independently in settings:
Hourly — next 6 hours with temperature, icon and rain chance Daily — next 5 days with highs and lows Extra stats — humidity, UV index, dew point, visibility, pressure Sun times — sunrise, sunset, daylight remaining
Radar and basemaps Radar draws precipitation over a map of coastlines, borders, state lines and lakes that is drawn from vector data bundled in the APK. No tile server, no API key, and it works offline. The data is Natural Earth 1:50m, which is public domain, simplified and delta-encoded to about 350 KB.
This replaces an earlier version that pulled tiles from OpenStreetMap, which their tile usage policy does not permit for a distributed app.
If you'd rather have a full raster basemap, you can still supply your own tile URL in settings under Custom basemap tile URL, using {z}, {x} and {y} placeholders:
https://tiles.example.com/dark/{z}/{x}/{y}.png?key=YOUR_KEY Several providers offer free tiers that permit app use. Whichever you pick, put their required credit in Basemap credit line so it renders on screen. Leave the URL blank to use the built-in map.
The illustrated scenes change with both conditions and time of day: star fields and a crescent moon at night, cloud banks when overcast, rain streaks, falling snow, lightning in storms. Randomness is seeded per day, so a scene holds steady across refreshes but differs tomorrow.
What's new
- Fixed The background reloaded every few seconds. Output filenames were given a timestamp in 2.2 so the launcher couldn't serve a stale cached image — but Projectivy re-requests the wallpaper on its own rotation interval, and a new filename each time meant it reloaded constantly. The rendered file is now reused unless something affecting its appearance has actually changed: any weather value, any setting, the active alert, aurora or air quality reading, the current advisory, or the minute when the clock is enabled.
- If you still see a pulse, that's Projectivy's own rotation transition applied to a single wallpaper — raise or disable its wallpaper rotation interval.
- In-app updates downloaded but wouldn't install, with no permission prompt. REQUEST_INSTALL_PACKAGES isn't a runtime permission, so no prompt is possible — from Android 8 it's a special app access granted in Settings, and until it's granted the install silently does nothing. The updater now checks first and opens the screen where you grant it.
- On the Shield that's Settings → Device Preferences → Security & restrictions → Unknown sources, with a per-app toggle. Grant it once, then run Check for updates again. Side-loading and the Downloader code don't need it.
- Added Lottie self-test, under Experimental features. A diagnostic for the blank animated radar: it serves a deliberately minimal animation through exactly the same path, so the file's contents are the only variable.
- Shapes only shows a yellow square sweeping across a dark backdrop, with no images anywhere in the file. If it animates, the launcher can load our animations and embedded images are the problem. If it's blank, it can't load them at all — which would mean animated radar, animated rain and snow, and animated wallpaper packs are not fixable and video is the only route to motion.
- Shapes plus an embedded image adds a magenta block, to confirm which. Set it back to Off afterwards; it overrides the normal wallpaper while active.
- Still outstanding Animated radar continues to render blank on an Nvidia Shield. The self-test above exists to find out why, and I'd rather establish the cause than keep guessing at it. It remains behind Experimental features along with animated rain and snow and animated Lottie packs, all off by default, all falling back to a still wallpaper
