• Playback now continues in a floating window when you leave the app. On Android 12 and later the home gesture keeps the film running without a visible break; on older releases the window opens as you leave. The window takes the film's own shape, read from the decoder rather than from the view — so a scope or anamorphic release opens in a window that fits it instead of being letterboxed inside one that does not. Play and pause from inside the window. A PiP button in the player controls, for entering the window without the gesture. Subtitles, the seek bar, the title plate and the next-episode prompt all step aside in the window, and any open track picker closes on the way in — at that size they cover the picture, and nothing inside the window can dismiss them. -- Playback
• Stalled playback is now detected by how fast the buffer is filling, not by whether it moved at all. A source delivering under a fifth of real time is reconnected instead of waited on. A brief moment of playback between stalls no longer resets stall detection, so a stuttering source reaches recovery instead of cycling. Devices now resume after rebuffering on a cushion they can actually rebuild. The wait is still capped at what it was before, but it comes down when the device's video buffer cannot hold that much of the stream's measured bitrate — a phone holding sixteen seconds of a 50 Mbps remux is no longer asked for eight of them before showing a frame. The rewind buffer is now taken from spare capacity instead of off the top, and starts at zero until the stream's bitrate is known — it can no longer crowd out the forward buffer on a high-bitrate file. Disk prefetching releases the connection the moment playback stops, instead of waiting for the next position update, and now also gives up a download in progress when the player runs short — rather than holding the link until that download finishes.
