SoundAura

An open-source ambient sound app for Android.

SoundAura does not include any audio tracks, to keep the download size small. Instead, it lets users add local files from their device and play any reasonable number of them at the same time, with individual volume controls for each track.

SoundAura can switch between an audio-focus-respecting mode and a play-in-background mode that ignores audio focus rules, allowing audio to play alongside other apps.

Features

- A library of tracks and playlists added from the device's local files, with individual volume controls for each track. - User-created presets of tracks. - An automatic stop timer, set by long-pressing the play or pause button. - A media notification to control playback when the app is in the background. Controls appear alongside other media session controls when play-in-background is off, or as a regular notification when it is on. - A Quick Settings tile to control playback. If the tile is in use, the notification can be hidden manually to save space. - Auto-pausing during calls. With play-in-background on, this also requires the read phone state permission. - Automatic stopping or pausing when switching to a new audio device with a volume of zero, such as moving from a headset to a silent speaker.

Permissions

No permissions are strictly required. The read external storage permission (Android 12 or lower) or read audio media permission (Android 13 or higher) is needed only when adding files beyond the 512-file limit (or 128 on Android 10 or lower). The notification permission is needed on Android 13 and above for the playback notification, and the read phone state permission is needed for auto-pausing during calls when play-in-background is on.

Privacy

SoundAura does not collect, store, or transmit any personal information.
