The magic behind Ran is very simple. When ADB debugging is enabled, the Android device has an adbd process running in the background that communicates with the debugging tools on the connected computer so that the developer can control the device. Ran implements this protocol, but instead runs on a computer on the same device, allowing it to control the device.

This ADB control channel has more privileges than normal applications (but less than root privileges), so it can kill other applications and do other things that applications cannot do otherwise. In doing so, the device remains unloaded.
