maytube

maytube is an Android client for yt2009***, a self-hosted retro (~2009-era) YouTube frontend/backend. It is not a YouTube client and has no connection to Google or YouTube — it only talks to a yt2009 instance you (or someone you trust) already run. Rather than reimplementing yt2009's UI or its SABR video pipeline natively, maytube loads your instance in a WebView and injects CSS/JS that reflows the site's fixed-width desktop layout into a proper single-column mobile app: a compact header, real 16:9 thumbnails, readable titles, and a shrunk (but otherwise untouched) video player. Search, browsing, accounts, comments and recommendations all come straight from your instance — maytube's job is the wrapper, not a reimplementation. Features: Full SABR/MSE playback via the instance's own player, no extra setup beyond entering your server's address Rotate to landscape to auto-fullscreen the video; rotate back to auto-exit Offline downloads — pulls the same video fragments the player uses, in parallel, and remuxes them on-device, instead of waiting on a slow server-side re-encode Persistent sign-in via ordinary cookies, same as a browser Dark mode No trackers, no ads, no accounts of its own — everything is between your device and your instance Requires a running yt2009 instance to connect to; this app does not include or host one. *This is referring to blocks by Roskomnadzor, a Russian Government Agency (Контора) that is responsible for unstable internet. Roskomnadzor (or Russian Communication Surveillance) has been blocking every non-russian service since ~2021. YouTube got pulled in 2023-2024, but it's still considered "throttled", not blocked. yt2009 precaches videos on the server before playback, sabr does the same but with streamed material. and because of that logic, it bypasses having to access youtube.com, googlevideo.com, allowing the use of YouTube without a VPN in Russia.
