Gmail Hide Ads

A focused Xposed module for removing sponsored rows from the Gmail Android app.

Features

- Removes sponsored conversation rows from the Gmail inbox before they are measured - Identifies advertisements by view class, which cannot be renamed by minification - Needs no per-locale word list; never mistakes a message whose subject reads "Ad" for an advertisement - Hooks an Android framework method rather than a Gmail class, so Gmail updates do not move the hook point - Fails open: if the layer cannot install, Gmail is left exactly as it was - No native library and no DEX-search dependency - Scope limited to the official Gmail Android package (com.google.android.gm)

How it works

Gmail is minified on every release, so almost nothing inside it keeps a stable name — except the advertisement rows. The module:

1. Waits for Application.attach() so Gmail's final application context is ready before the hook is installed. 2. Hooks ViewGroup.addView(View, int, ViewGroup.LayoutParams), the overload that the other addView signatures funnel into. 3. Classifies each view by walking its superclasses for a name under com.google.android.gm.ads. ending in AdTeaserItemView. 4. Caches the verdict per class, keeping a hot framework path cheap. 5. Zeroes the layout height and sets visibility to GONE on matching rows before measurement. 6. Deoptimises the hook target so ART cannot serve an inlined copy past the hook.

Requirements

- A framework implementing the modern Xposed API, version 101 or newer - Rooted: Vector on Android 8.1 or newer, with Magisk or KernelSU and Zygisk enabled - Rootless: LSPatch (JingMatrix fork) with Vector embedded - Official Gmail app (com.google.android.gm)

Installation

1. Download and install the latest APK. 2. Open the framework manager and enable Gmail Hide Ads. 3. Force-stop Gmail once after installing or updating the module, then reopen it. 4. Check framework logs for entries beginning with "GmailHideAds".
