AI summary

Motion-based theft detection that locks the screen on the grab itself, before a getaway occurs. Complements Android's built-in Theft Detection Lock by covering cases like walking away or train-door snatches. Version 1.1 adds a quick settings tile for instant arming and disarming from anywhere. Customizable sensitivity, lock screen message, background image, alert sound with delay and repeat count.

About this app

Android already has Theft Detection Lock, and it is good. It uses motion sensors and an on-device model to spot a phone being snatched, and it locks the screen. But it waits for the getaway — it looks for the snatch followed by running, biking or driving.

That leaves a gap, and it is the ordinary case. Someone takes your phone and walks off. Someone takes it as the train doors close. Neither produces a getaway the model recognises, so the screen stays unlocked with everything on it.

SonderAssist fires on the grab itself.

This is not a replacement for Theft Detection Lock. Leave that on. This covers a case it does not.

  • SonderAssist 1.1 A quick settings tile Pull down the panel, tap Edit, and drag SonderAssist in. Tapping the tile starts or stops the watch; holding it opens the app.
  • Arming and disarming is the thing done most often, and it is done in the moments where opening an app is least convenient — getting on a train, putting the phone away, handing it to someone. A tile is two gestures from anywhere.
  • The tile reads the service directly rather than a stored flag, so it cannot claim to be off while it is running. If the permission to lock the screen has not been given yet, tapping the tile opens the app instead of doing nothing.
  • Everything from 1 If you are coming from 0.1, version 1 is where the app became usable: sensitivity with the real figures shown, a message and a background picture on the lock screen, a sound of your choosing that plays a set number of times after a delay you set, a quick settings tile, and fixes for the app stopping on its own after a reboot.
  • It still fires on thin evidence on purpose, still cannot tell a theft from any other motion of the same shape, and its thresholds are still reasoned from physics rather than measured from recordings. Those remain the honest limits.
