Description
Briar is a messenger based on secure Tor networks, as well as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
The application uses a peer-to-peer system with no central servers for data transfer, so the service cannot be blocked by taking away servers. Thus, participants exchange messages directly with each other through end-to-end encryption. The messenger uses Tor protocols by default. If the government blocks this onion routing, the app will continue to function via nearby Wi-Fi and local Bluetooth networks.
It is designed for activists, journalists, and anyone else who needs a safe, simple, and reliable way to communicate. Unlike traditional messaging tools such as email, Twitter, or Telegram, Briar does not depend on a central server — messages are synchronized directly between users' devices. If the Internet is down, Briar can sync via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, enabling information transfer during crises or rallies. It is fully decentralized, confidential, encrypted and open source.
