🛡️ AdAway Community — Community-Maintained Ad Blocker

AdAway Community is an unofficial community fork of AdAway for Android, focused on improving VPN-mode stability, compatibility with newer Android versions, and maintaining Android TV support.

Based on the original open-source AdAway project, this community edition continues development with practical fixes and tested changes while remaining compatible with the upstream project whenever possible.

🚫 System-Wide Ad Blocking

AdAway blocks unwanted advertisements at the network level using hosts-based filtering. Depending on the selected setup, it can operate through Android's local VPN mode or root-based functionality.

The application does not provide a remote VPN service. Its VPN mode is used locally to process and filter device traffic.

📱 Improved VPN Stability

One of the main goals of this fork is addressing VPN-mode issues that can occur on recent Android versions and different device configurations.

The community patches focus on preventing unwanted VPN restarts, reducing unnecessary tunnel rebuilds, and keeping the VPN service state synchronized with the application interface, notification, and Quick Settings tile.

🔄 Network Change Handling

The fork improves behavior when Wi-Fi or mobile networks change, helping avoid unnecessary VPN restarts or reconnect loops during normal connectivity changes.

Explicit user actions to start or stop the VPN are also handled separately from internal background synchronization.

📺 Android TV Support

AdAway Community includes Android TV integration in the same codebase.

TV-specific improvements include:

• Android TV / Leanback launcher support • Remote and D-pad friendly navigation • TV-optimized home interface • DNS log screen for TV • Quick access to toggle, update, sync, DNS monitor and host-source actions

This makes the project suitable for compatible Android TV devices and TV boxes as well as regular Android phones and tablets.

🧪 Community Testing

The project includes device-focused testing for recent Android versions, VPN behavior, Quick Settings synchronization, network changes, and Android TV navigation.

Because Android behavior varies between manufacturers, ROMs, and TV devices, additional community feedback remains an important part of development.

AdAway's established host-source system allows users to manage sources for filtering unwanted domains. The application can also provide DNS monitoring and related tools for understanding local filtering behavior.

AdAway Community is not the official AdAway application and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or signed by the official AdAway maintainers. It uses its own community signing key, so the official AdAway application must be uninstalled before installing this fork.

AdAway Community remains based on AdAway and is released under GPLv3+ while retaining the original project's credits and licensing requirements.
