About this app
The core Package Installer 8.0.0 (specifically com.google.android.packageinstaller) is a fundamental Android system component introduced alongside Android 8.0 Oreo. Because it is a backend core system application, its official description does not list consumer-facing feature updates like a standard app. Instead, it marks a significant structural change in how Android handles apps.
What's new
Google's Android Package Installer version 8.0.0 (API 26) introduced core platform changes alongside Android 8.0 (Oreo), most notably shifting from a global "Unknown Sources" setting to a per-app permission model for installing APKs outside the Google Play Store.
