NoBonk

An Android app that uses the rear camera and on-device AI to detect nearby people and obstacles, with vibration, sound, and on-screen alerts. Background use is the main experience: start detection, then switch to the home screen or another app.

NoBonk can miss or misidentify hazards and does not replace watching your surroundings.

Detection

- On-device YOLO26 model (nano or small) via ONNX Runtime with NNAPI and XNNPACK acceleration - Detects people, animals, and obstacles in real time - Camera captures frames at up to 10 fps, backing off to 3 fps when the path is clear - Distance estimation from bounding-box size using a pinhole-camera model - Approach tracking with IoU plus time-to-collision physics to flag fast-closing objects - Frame analysis for blank walls and ground hazards such as potholes and step-downs

Alerts

- Escalating haptic and on-screen warnings at LOW, MEDIUM, and HIGH levels - Stereo-panned chirps direct the sound toward the hazard side when using earbuds - Optional spoken alerts describe the object's direction - Sound, vibration, and voice can each be switched off - Night boost brightens the detector input on dark scenes and reports when it does

Detection history

- Foreground sessions, alert counts, busiest alert hours, and approximate event locations - Stored only on your device, encrypted in private storage - Optional coarse location tagging, off by default

Privacy

No video or photos are ever recorded, stored, or transmitted. Camera frames are processed in memory and immediately discarded. The Android app has no INTERNET permission, and camera analysis works offline. Event history is encrypted locally and never uploaded. Cloud backup is disabled so nothing is swept into it.
