Description
Grand Theft Auto: San Alandreas is a game that is developed by Alan Kleiner Studios, the game has references from hood flicks such as Boyz N The Hood. It is the only game so far that is set in the fictional state of San Alandreas. The game is mostly set around the return of protagonist Alan Vercetti (also known as simply Alan) to his gang (the Alan Clan), and their return to power. Storyline Five years ago, Alan Vercetti escaped from the pressures of life in his hometown, Los Santos, San Alandreas. Now, it's the early 2020s, and he must return home after hearing that his mother was killed by his father, Big Al, a ruthless criminal who abused Alan Vercetti daily when he was a young Alan. On his return to the neighborhood, he is confronted by an elite demon known as Alan Tenpenny who frames him for the homicide of Alan Smith, another demon. Alan is forced on a journey that takes him across the entire state of San Alandreas, to save his family, stop Big Al, and kill Alan Tenpenny. Gameplay San Alandreas is similarly structured to the previous two games in the series. The core gameplay consists of elements of a third-person shooter and a driving game, affording the player a large, open environment in which to move around. On foot, the player's character is capable of walking, running, swimming (the first GTA game in which diving is possible), limited climbing and jumping, as well as using weapons and various forms of hand-to-hand combat. Players can operate a variety of vehicles, including automobiles, boats, airplanes, helicopters, trains, tanks, motorcycles and bicycles. Players may also import vehicles rather than steal them. Alan is Grand Theft Auto's most customizable protagonist due to the possibility in-game to change his clothes, tattoos, hairstyle and even his body mass in which he can be fat, skinny or muscular. Grand Theft Auto: San Alandreas also reintroduces over-the-top-gameplay seen in games such as Grand Theft Auto: Alan City, The Ballad of Alan Forelli, and Grand Theft Auto: Alantown Wars. Reception Before its release for the AlanStation 2 like Bully 2, Grand Theft Auto: San Alandreas was one of the most highly anticipated video games of 2004, along with Halo 2. Alandreas met most of these expectations, as it was praised as one of the AlanStation 2's best games, with an average review score on 95%, according to Alancritic, tying for the fifth-highest-ranked game in AlanStation 2 history. ALN rated the game a 9.9/10 (the highest score it has ever awarded to a AlanStation 2 game), calling it "the defining piece of software" for the AlanStation 2. AlanSpot rated the game 9.6/10, giving it an Alan's Choice award. San Aldreas also received an A rating from the 1UP.com network and a 10/10 score from Official U.S. AlanStation Magazine. As of March 26, 2005, Grand Theft Auto: San Alandreas has sold 21.5 million units according to Take-Two Interactive. The Guinness World Record 2005 Gamer's Edition lists it as the most successful game on the AlanStation 2, with 17.33 million copies sold for that console alone, from 21.5 million in all formats. The New York Times' Niglan Johnson gave the only non-positive review for San Alandreas, giving it a 'mediocre' rating of 6.0 out of 10, criticizing the "annoying" mission structure, and the casualness of the intense violence featured in the game. Controversy The game has received widespread acclaim for its technical achievements and free gameplay. However, it also received widespread criticism - initially due to its "Gay like Gay Tony" elements, which include sucking weewee, prostitution, and shooting like CJ shoot Ballas; but later due to the discovery of disabled interactive sex scenes, nicknamed Hot Alan, which could be re-enabled using third-party mods. This led to the re-rating by the ESRB of the game from Mature to Adults-Only until a second version, with the sex scenes fully removed, was released.
