Description
Kiwix is an application for reading both Wikipedia and other wikis (Ubuntu documentation, WikiLeaks, WikiSource, etc.) without an Internet connection. Once you download the necessary files (which can be very large) once, you no longer need an internet connection to use the application. Article content and images are stored as a compressed file in ZIM format. 1. Where can I find new dictionaries? The Kiwix program uses the ZIM format. We produce our own ZIM files, which are available for download from the Kiwix library (from the program itself). You can also use Wikipedia's Book Creation page to create your own ZIM files of individual pages or groups of pages. 2. Can I update the ZIM file? You cannot update the file itself, but you can download a new ZIM file with updated content. 3. How can I create a ZIM file? Click on the following link to export individual articles from Wikipedia. Any other options for creating a ZIM file are unfortunately still too complicated. If you want some information about this, read this page. 4. How can you optimize the search index? [It is not yet clear if this question and answer is applicable to the android version of the app] Run the "./kiwix-compact" script on your computer (only available on GNU/Linux). This operation will reduce the disk space used by almost 50%. 5. Is there a forum where Kiwix users can share experiences and help each other? Yes, the forum is located at https://forum.kiwix.org. 6. I downloaded a ZIP file (pre-indexed ZIP file) from the site, but I can't unzip it. The file seems to be corrupted. What should I do? Use an extractor that supports the ZIP64 format (ZIP format for large files), such as 7-zip. If the error still repeats, it means your file was corrupted during download. Re-download the file via Bittorrent and it will be intact. 7. My ZIM file is too big, what should I do? Kiwix can work with ZIM files split into 2GB pieces. The extension of the ZIM files should be of the following form xxx.zimaa, xxx.zimab, xxx.zimac, etc. You can use the following programs to split a ZIM file into parts: For Microsoft Windows: FSJ-Lite, Total Commander For Apple Mac OSX: Split&Concat For GNU/Linux - using the console command: split --bytes=2000M my_big_file.zim
