IPFS ("Inter-Platform File System") is a p2p (peer-to-peer, decentralized, peer-to-peer) file sharing system that aims to revolutionize the way information is distributed around the world and beyond. IPFS consists of several innovations in information exchange protocols and distributed systems. The result is a file system of the future that is unparalleled. ♤ FEATURES of IPFS Lite ♤ • Supports standard IPFS use cases (e.g., adding, receiving, and publishing files). • Provides a user interface to implement these common use cases. • Limited IPFS node configuration is possible. • Launches the IPFS node in client or server mode. ◇ Differences between IPFS Lite and IPFS ◇ Basically, IPFS Lite has the same functionality as a regular IPFS node. There are, however, a couple of differences between the two. • No Gateway support: the IPFS Gateway is not supported (performance/security, requires Android 10 for full functionality). • No support for CLI and HTTP, API: The public API is not supported, the app itself is based on the internal IPFS Core API. • No WebUI support: The WebUI function is not supported. • Supports standard IPFS use cases (e.g. adding, receiving and publishing files). • Provides a user interface to implement these common use cases. • Limited configuration of the IPFS node is possible. • Starts the IPFS node in client or server mode. ♧ NOTES ♧ Here's what happens when you add a file to IPFS-whether you store the file on your local node or on a node managed by a pinning service or IPFS-enabled application. When you add a file to IPFS, your file is split into small chunks, cryptographically hashed, and given a unique fingerprint called a Content Identifier (CID). This CID acts as a permanent record of your file as it exists at any given time. When other nodes search for your file, they ask their peer nodes who stores the content referenced by the file's CID. When they browse or download your file, they cache a copy — and become another provider of your content until their cache is cleared. A node can cache content to keep (and provide) it forever, or discard content it hasn't used in a while to save space. This means that each node on the network stores only the content it is interested in, plus some indexing information that helps determine which node stores what. If you add a new version of your file to IPFS, its cryptographic hash changes, so it gets a new CID. This means that files stored in IPFS are tamper-resistant and censor-resistant — any changes to the file don't overwrite the original, and shared file fragments can be reused to minimize storage costs. However, this does not mean you need to memorize a long string of CIDs — IPFS can find the latest version of your file using the IPNS decentralized naming system, and DNSLink can be used to map CIDs to human-readable DNS names.
